How laser hair removal works

The laser’s light targets the colour (melanin) in the hair and turns into heat. This heat damages the hair follicle, which slows down hair growth.

Hair grows in three phases: growing (anagen), resting and shedding. The laser works best on hairs in the growing phase, so several sessions are needed to treat every hair at the right time, followed by occasional maintenance.

We use the Alma Soprano ICE by Alma Lasers, a diode laser with SHR technology.

Instead of a few strong pulses, SHR delivers many low-energy pulses at a high repetition rate while the applicator glides over the skin (the In-Motion technique). Heat builds up gradually in the hair follicle, so the treatment is more comfortable for most clients. Its ICE cooling keeps the surface of the skin cool during the session.

According to Alma Lasers, the Soprano ICE is FDA cleared for all skin types (I–VI), including tanned skin.

Who it’s for

Laser hair removal can treat hair anywhere on the body and works on all skin types. Many clients choose it to stop regular shaving or waxing.

It can also help with excessive hair growth, such as hirsutism (hair on the upper lip, chin, jawline or lower stomach) or hypertrichosis (more hair than usual).

Results are best on light skin with dark hair. Darker skin or lighter hair may need more sessions.

Preparation and aftercare

Before your session

Avoid direct sunlight for at least two weeks.
Do not tweeze, wax or have electrolysis for one month.
Shave the treatment area the day before or on the day.

After your session

Some redness or small bumps are normal and usually settle within a day.
You may notice a few ingrown hairs over the next days.
Avoid tanning for two weeks and always wear sunscreen in direct sun.
