Acne scars can stay long after the breakouts are gone. Microneedling is one of the treatments we use at DermaZone in Oakville to soften the look of acne scars and help your skin look smoother and more even.
What are acne scars?
Acne scars form when deep breakouts, such as cysts or nodules, heal. They can be sunken (ice pick, rolling or boxcar scars) or raised. Flat dark marks left after a breakout are not true scars: they are a type of pigmentation and usually fade over time. Picking or squeezing spots can lead to scarring.
How microneedling helps
Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, uses a device with very fine needles to make tiny punctures in the skin. Your skin responds by producing more collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep it firm and smooth. Over time this helps reduce the look of acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles.
At DermaZone we use the Eclipse MicroPen Evo.
Is it right for you?
You are a good candidate for microneedling if you:
- Have not taken Accutane in the past three months
- Have no open wounds or skin infections
- Are not pregnant
- Have no history of problems with wound healing
We check that microneedling is right for your skin at your free consultation.
What to expect
- Your treatment: we cleanse your face and apply a numbing cream before treating your skin. You can go home right after.
- Downtime: redness, swelling or discomfort usually settles within two days.
- Results: you may see a difference straight away, but the full effect shows in 4–6 weeks. Regular treatments every 4–6 weeks and yearly touch-ups help maintain it.
Before and after your session
- Use sunscreen every day, and avoid vitamin A and retinol products for 5 days before.
- Avoid blood-thinning medications. Please check with your doctor before stopping any medication.
- After treatment, skip makeup and sunscreen for the first 12 hours and stay out of the sun. After that, limit sun exposure and use sunscreen every day.
- Cleanse gently and return to your usual skincare after 48 hours.
