What is cellulite?

Cellulite is a common, harmless condition that makes the skin on the thighs, hips, buttocks and abdomen look lumpy and dimpled.

Most women develop some cellulite after puberty, and even very fit women have it.

Common causes

  • Structure of the skin: fibrous cords tie the skin to the muscle below, while fat between them pushes up.
  • Genetics may play the largest role.
  • Hormones.
  • Age: skin loses elasticity over time.
  • Inactivity and pregnancy.

Good to know

  • Results are gradual and need upkeep. Dermatology sources note that most cellulite treatments give temporary results, and massage-based treatments need several sessions and repeat visits to keep the effect.
  • Healthy habits help: staying active (walking, swimming, yoga or Pilates), building muscle and keeping a healthy weight may improve the look of cellulite.
