Unwanted Hair: Causes and Removal Options

A focused light beam targets the pigment in the hair and slows regrowth. Over a series of sessions, most clients see a large, lasting reduction in unwanted hair.

About unwanted hair

Many people remove body or facial hair for comfort or appearance, often to stop regular shaving or waxing.

When women have coarse, dark hair in a male pattern, such as on the face, chest or abdomen, it is called hirsutism. It affects about 5% of women. Lighter, finer hair is usually not hirsutism.

What can cause excess hair

  • Hair follicles that are very sensitive to normal levels of testosterone.
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the most common medical cause.
  • Family history and background: some women naturally have more hair.
  • Rarely, certain medicines or other medical conditions.

Good to know

  • Permanent reduction, not complete removal. Several sessions are needed, and touch-ups may be needed later.
  • Best results on light skin with dark, coarse hair. Blond, red and white hair respond poorly to laser.
  • Avoid tanning before and after treatment, including tanning beds and self-tanners. A tan makes treatment less effective.
  • See a doctor about thick, dark hair on the face or body. Get medical help quickly if dense hair appears suddenly together with a deeper voice or more muscle.
